Montague (), indefinite descriptions are composed of a common noun and an indefinite determiner. An indefinite determiner has an existential quantifier as part of its interpretation. Thus, all indefinite descriptions were expected to have existential interpretations. David Lewis’ () paper “Adverbs of Quantification”. Much of the book, which begins when the author was 10 in , reads like a novel, and he delivers many moving descriptions of various gay coming-of-age moments—e.g., the first time he was tested for HIV and his encounter with a Keith Haring mural, which “hit me with the force that Picasso’s Guernica had.” Equally affecting is Dube’s.

Book Description This volume presents 'semantic incorporation' as an analysis accounting for many striking similarities between the semantic properties of incorporated nouns in West Greenlandic and bare plurals and split noun phrases in West Germanic by: Indefinite descriptions like "a G" have received somewhat less attention than their definite cousins.

Traditionally, these were taken to contribute a restricted existential claim (restricted by the overt descriptive material) to the the semantic content expressed by the utterance. Ever since Russell, the subject of definite descriptions has been central to the philosophy of language.

Gary Ostertag's excellent anthology brings together the classic writings on the subject and some of the most important recent work. First published inthis book focuses on the semantics of definite and indefinite descriptions — taking the presuppositional theory of definiteness and indefiniteness proposed by Heim as a starting point.

It seeks to show that there exists a special type of indefinites that have an interpretation commonly associated with by: Russell has not been alone in thinking that descriptions and definite determiners are important. The discussion of definite and indefinite descriptions (in English, phrases of the form ‘the F’ and ‘an F’) has been at the center of analytic philosophy for over a century now.

The reason that philosophers find these apparently simple expressions so intriguing is that choices made about their proper logical analysis. The book Semantic Incorporation and Indefinite Descriptions: Semantic and Syntactic Aspects of Noun Incorporation in West Greenlandic, Veerle Van Geenhoven is published by Center for the Study of Language and Information.

Claim 1: Indefinite descriptions do not contribute constituents to propositions. That is, there is no part of the proposition that is denoted by the description. Claim 2: Sentences containing indefinite descriptions do not have the same form as sentences containing names.

In particular, they are not of subject-predicate form. 5 Predicative and free variable indefinite descriptions Some features of the ideal theory of indefinite descriptions Converting these features into a theory of indefinites. Nonfamiliarity and indefinite descriptions 1.

corresponding indefinite description noted in Diesing (Indefinites, ); and restrictions on Q-adverbs, noted in Kratzer (The Generic Book. In English, the two indefinite articles are "a" and "an." Like other articles, indefinite articles are invariable. You use one or the other, depending on the first letter of the word following the article, for pronunciation reasons.

Indefinite descriptions constitute Russell's third group. Descriptions most frequently appear in the standard subject–predicate form. Russell put forward his theory of descriptions to solve a number of problems in the philosophy of language.

The two major problems are (1) co-referring expressions and (2) non-referring expressions. Indefinite descriptions refer to „novel‟ items, definite descriptions to „familiar‟ ones. My dissertation serves as the first systematic effort to bridge the gap between.

or various large cardinal axioms) the axiom of choice is obviously true. Consider the following reasoning: Given any non-empty set of non-empty sets x, if we map every member of x, say y, onto a member of y, then.

Like Strawson, Heim argued that definite descriptions are referential rather than quantificational; however she also argued indefinite descriptions are referential as well.

Heim took the uses of definite and indefinite descriptions as they occur in (6) as typifying their semantics. (6) Mary saw a movie last week. The movie was not very interesting. Indefinite definition, not definite; without fixed or specified limit; unlimited: an indefinite number.

See more. The name “ indefinite description ” for this syntactic form is historically based: of course, it is no more and no less indefinite than its counterpart with an explicit lo.

Indefinite descriptions were introduced into the language in order to imitate the syntax of English and other natural languages. Below is a brief description of the main determiners. (There is a separate page on each one.) Possessive Determiners.

The possessive determiners (called "possessive adjectives" in traditional grammar) are my, your, his, her, its, our, their, and whose. A possessive determiner sits before a noun (or a pronoun) to show who (or what) owns it.

The prototypes of definiteness and indefiniteness in English are the definite article the and the indefinite article a/an, and singular noun phrases (NPs)1 determined by them.

That being the case it is not to be predicted that the concepts, whatever their content, will extend satisfactorily to. Indefinite by Corinne Michaels is the first book in her brand new Indefinite Duet and the sixth book in the overall Salvation series. The story of Quinn and Ashton is a little heartbreaking.

There is so much angst and back and forth between these two characters. They are so obviously in love with each other. The method of conjugate gradients for solving systems of linear equations with a symmetric positive definite matrix A is given as a logical development of the Lanczos algorithm for tridiagonalizing approach suggests numerical algorithms for solving such systems when A is symmetric but indefinite.

These methods have advantages when A is large and sparse. It has been noticed that indefinite descriptions with the Spanish determiner unos (plural-"one") have a group denotation (Villalta ).
